Definitions of promise :
BUT
What about those that do mean something? Maybe we should take more time to consider what we promise. Take a moment before saying you can make a promise or commitment to someone.. and make it REALLY count.
I have been thinking about this for the past 24 hours. What promises am I willing to keep and what are the most significant to me?
To my boyfriend:
To always love you for you
To show you everyday how important you are to me regardless of how busy I am
To support you in everything you do
To be faithful
To be honest
To make time for us even when there is none
To be compassionate when you need it
To be strong when your in need
To say sorry when I am wrong
I cannot promise you that our relationship will be perfect or easy. I cannot promise you that I won't make mistakes or have an off day, but I can promise you that I will give everything that I can and try my hardest even when I don't think I can. I promise to love you even when I think loving you isn't enough.
To my kids:
To tell you everyday how much I love you
To tell you that I think you are the best ball player, the best singer, the best at conquering the world even when you feel like the world is against you
To be honest with you when you ask me for the truth
To shield you from what I can and to help you through what I can't
To teach you all the wisdom I have learned from generations passed
To let you see that I am not perfect and know I don't expect you to be
To always stand up for you when you have done nothing wrong (and sometimes when you have!)
To be your biggest fan
To teach you to respect your elders, use your manners, and be kind
To admit my mistakes and help us learn from them
I cannot promise you that the world we live in is perfect or that you will get everything you want for Christmas. I cannot promise you that those you love will live forever or that things never change, but I can promise you that I will do my very best to show you everyday that I can be your best friend and your mom. I promise to love you regardless of the path you may choose or who you choose to take that path with. I promise to make the most of every second I have with you now because I know someday you will be all grown up and all I will have is the memories.
To My Dad:
To always respect you
To be proud of the daddy that you were and the grandfather you have become
To always be daddy's little girl
To be there for you if you can no longer care for yourself
I cannot promise to never disagree with you or to never raise my voice. I cannot promise that I will not say there were times you weren't there for me, but I can promise that I will tell everyone how hard you worked to provide for your family, how there were nights you didn't eat dinner to make sure we were full. I promise to tell everyone you were a proud stubborn man and I am glad to be like you.
To my mom:
To always hug you a million times when I see you even though it drives me crazy
To tell you your food is good...because it's the same food I have eaten for the past 26 years! :)
To let you see your grandbabies as much as you want
To help you with your spelling and not make you feel bad about it
To listen to your stories
To be there for you when you can no longer care for yourself
To cherish all the times we have together, even when you think I don't ;)
I cannot promise you that I won't get agitated with your constant chatter or the fact that you make a million excuses why you started smoking again, but I can promise you that I do learn from you even when you think I am not listening. I can promise you that although I do not always support your decisions I do respect that it is your life.
To my sister:
To always look up to you
To always ask you for advice because you are wise beyond your years
To always tell everyone how strong you are
To listen to you when I know it's important
To show everyone how proud I am of you for the wife and mother you have become
I promise to be there for you no matter what
I cannot promise you that we won't fight like sisters do or talk behind each others back(we are Guthrie's that's a given ;) ) but I can promise you that I will never let us go years again without talking. I promise that whatever I say behind your back.. I will also say to your face ;) I promise to be a better sister than I have in the past.
To my friends:
To listen to your problems as much as you listen to mine
To drop everything I am doing when you call and say I need you
To be happy for you when you succeed
To support you even when you feel like you cannot go on
To tell you to get off your butt and get done what needs to be done
I cannot promise that I will get to spend a lot of time with you or be able to talk on the phone for hours, but I can promise you that I will ALWAYS make time for you. I cannot promise you that as we get older our lives will remain the same and so will our friendship, but I can promise you that as our friendship changes I will do what I can to keep our friendship what it has always been.. important to me.
and to myself:
To always respect myself and make sure those that matter do the same
To try my best
To take care of myself and my family
To put the effort in to any relationship that I deem important because if I don't I may not have that person in my life anymore
Most importantly I promise to be who I am, accept that I may not be perfect and only allow those worth having an impact in my life be apart of it.
- make a promise or commitment
- promise to undertake or give; "I promise you my best effort"
- predict: make a prediction about; tell in advance; "Call the outcome of an election"
- a verbal commitment by one person to another agreeing to do (or not to do) something in the future
- give grounds for expectations; "The new results were promising"; "The results promised fame and glory"
- grounds for feeling hopeful about the future; "there is little or no promise that he will recover"
